Getting ready for a first job or course

The skills that matter most

  • Getting there on time, the same way each week.
  • Knowing what to bring, and packing it the night before.
  • Saying hello, and asking a question when unsure.
  • Telling someone if they are sick or running late.
  • Following a short list of tasks.
  • Getting home again.

How to practise

  1. Pick one skill from the list.
  2. Practise it in the real place, not just at home.
  3. Do it again next week, the same way.
  4. Help a little less each time, when they are ready.

Questions to ask the workplace or course

  • Who can my young adult ask for help?
  • Can we visit before the first day?
  • Are there any changes that could make it easier? For example, written instructions or a quiet place for breaks.

This is the kind of practice Waymaker does one-to-one. Call us if you would like help with a first job or course.
